Dixie Chicks

To some country fans, a glorious return to the country music charts of traditional country instrumentation and “real talent.” (The ladies played their own instruments and came up in bluegrass, which is not a subgenre with fans who give out participation awards.)

To others, a simply pop country sellout story like any other. (The band changed their sound and lost founding members before achieving mainstream success.)

The debate was sidelined in 2003, when singer Natalie Maines criticized President George W. Bush onstage, days ahead of the United States’ invasion of Iraq. The band and their music were boycotted, despite an apology from Maines and Merle Haggard coming to their defense.
